Donald Trump

  • Birth date: June 14, 1946 (age 77)
  • Birthplace: Queens
  • Party: Republican
  • Education: Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania (BS)
  • Spouse: Melania Trump
  • Former office/professions: U.S. president; Trump Organization president; author, “The Art of the Deal”; host, “The Apprentice”

Trump is the first sitting or former U.S. president to be indicted, four times. That creates an unprecedented situation for Trump, the front-runner for the GOP presidential nomination in 2024, in which he will be at the center of multiple — and at times conflicting — legal proceedings during an election year. Trump has pleaded not guilty in all of the cases.

The four cases are these: Special counsel Jack Smith is prosecuting Trump on the federal level for attempting to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Smith’s team has also charged Trump with more than three dozen criminal counts for allegedly keeping and hiding classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida. On the state level, Fulton County District Attorney Fani T. Willis (D) charged Trump and 18 co-conspirators under the state’s expansive racketeering law for trying to reverse the 2020 election results in Georgia. Finally, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D) slapped Trump with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to allegations that he paid hush money to cover up an alleged affair with an adult-film actress. Trump was already found liable for defaming journalist E. Jean Carroll over allegations that he raped her. Trump has pleaded not guilty in a second defamation suit being brought by Carroll; the trial date for that is in early 2024.

Trump still has a strong hold over the GOP primary electorate and is leading in most early polls of the 2024 Republican race. Polls also show that a rematch with Biden in the general election would be close.
