The top trends of the Emmys red carpet

Pity the poor TV A-lister, with just eight days’ worth of recovery from one red carpet to the next. Hot on the heels of last Sunday’s Golden Globes, the rescheduled 2023 Emmys — which usually take place in September but were pushed because of the concurrent Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes last year — took place Monday evening in Los Angeles.

Maybe it was the silver (not red!) carpet that lent the evening an extra-special feeling, or maybe it was the “finally” feeling of it all. But one way or another, the guests at the 75th Primetime Emmys kicked the formality up a notch, with traditional tuxedos and royal silhouettes in abundance. Below, read about what all the best-dressed wore in common.

Red, again

Maybe there’s something about an awards show in January that just makes you want to wear the month’s official jewel tone. Just like last week, a number of attendees arrived in red, including Elizabeth Debicki in a backless dark velvet Dior; Selena Gomez in a cabernet-colored Oscar de la Renta; Sarah Snook in a scoop-neck, full-skirted Vivienne Westwood; Katherine Heigl in a strapless, satin Reem Acra; Suki Waterhouse in a backless (and sideless) Valentino; Meghann Fahy in a rosette-adorned Armani and Janelle James in a regal Rodarte with maroon velvet ribbons on the shoulders.

Florals

… For the dead of winter? Groundbreaking. Nominee Ali Wong dazzled in an unusual two-gowns-in-one Louis Vuitton look with a sparkling silver top and bold blue, green, red and pink print on the bottom, while Jenna Ortega wore a champagne-colored, strapless Dior with a delicate botanical design. Anthony Anderson, much less subtly, arrived in a tuxedo encrusted with red flowers on the sleeves.

Full skirts

Lizzy Caplan, Jessica Williams, “White Lotus” actress Simona Tabasco and “Swarm” star Dominique Fishback all went full prom queen with voluminous skirts to announce their presences in a big way. Quinta Brunson described her magenta Dior gown, with a dainty bow-belt and tea-length cut, as “old school glam.”

The return of the bow tie

Just a few short years ago, it looked like awards shows and black-tie attire might just go their separate ways forever. But this year, Jason Segel, Henry Winkler, Jon Cryer, Matthew Macfadyen, Seth Meyers, Brett Goldstein, Kumail Nanjiani, Daniel Radcliffe and even Weird Al arrived in the tuxedo’s traditional neckwear. Adam Brody kicked the formality up another notch with a cummerbund.

Light green

Hannah Waddingham, in custom Marchesa, told E! host Laverne Cox that she had asked designer Georgina Chapman to make her mermaid-silhouette dress in the same color as her own eyes. Padma Lakshmi, also in Marchesa, and Rhea Seehorn, in a high-collared, jewel-encrusted Naeem Khan gown, reprised the unusual color in slightly warmer, lime-ier variations.

Ear climber earrings

After decades of being upstaged by the lobes, the rest of the ear is ready for its glow-up moment. Elizabeth Debicki arrived at the ceremony wearing a snakelike silver ear piece, while Rachel Brosnahan wore silver and gold hoops that hugged her ear all the way from lobe to top. “Yellowjackets” star Sophie Nélisse paired her diamond-encrusted silver hoop earrings with two cuffs that hugged her outer ear, while Jazz Charton — wife of “Succession” star Kieran Culkin — adorned the same spot with a swoop of cascading diamonds.
